Hayley looked at her phone screen. It was 3:25 a.m. She was in the middle of the woods, gazing at a body. She knew who he was. Her best friend.
It all started two days ago, when Hayley, Margot, Andrew, and Tom decided to go on a trip. Margot suggested to try out something new. So that’s how they got to her dad’s cabin, in the woods. It was a cold winter but that didn’t matter to them that much. The cabin was huge, way too big for only four people. It had twenty windows and one door. A large red one.
There were only two rooms; the boys discussed a little bit and decided to let Margot and Hayley sleep in those, and they were going to sleep in the living room. The first day had gone by very fast. Andrew cooked dinner and they all ended up talking until 2 a.m. Then, they all went to sleep. At least that’s what they thought. The next morning, Hayley woke up first. She knocked on Margot’s door but there was no answer. She slipped her head through the door and saw that her friend was peacefully sleeping. Hayley closed the door and went downstairs. When she got to the living room, she realized something wrong: Andrew was there but Tom wasn’t. Was he in the cabin? Probably not, because there wasn’t any sound.
Her heart skipped a beat. Tom was her best friend. She was supposed to take care of him. But no. He couldn’t be gone. There’s no way she would’ve let that happen. She quickly started to run around the house and search for him. No sign. Anxiety started to settle in. She could feel her tears filling up her eyes. She went outside and tried to walk around a bit; relax her mind. It was freezing.
When Margot and Andrew woke up, they found Hayley crying and sipping from a big cup of coffee. She looked like she’d been crying for hours. ‘What happened? Are you OK?’ Andrew said with a worried tone. After a couple of seconds of silence, Hayley finally managed to explain what happened. Three minutes later she was searching around the cabin, again, this time with Margot’s and Andrew’s help. Nothing new. The cabin was exactly how she left it.
It’s been five hours since Hayley noticed Tom’s disappearance. It was time to call the police. She took her phone out of her pocket, dialled the number, and pressed on the phone sign. A woman answered, asking what’s the problem; Haley began telling the story again. Her hands were shaking, and she could barely breathe. ‘It’s going to be fine. We’re sending a crew there right now,’ the officer said.
Hayley went back to the living room. Margot and Andrew were lying on the vintage brown sofa. ‘What should we do? It is going to take more than 2 hours for the police to arrive here.’ Andrew tried to say something but stopped. ‘Are there… any chances that he’s still alive?’ he said briefly. ‘I- I don’t know. It’s freezing outside. What if he’s out there? I want to go search for him. Are you guys in?’ Hayley said rubbing her eyes.
They had their gloves and scarfs on, but somehow the cold air still managed to get to their skin. Hayley could feel it in the atmosphere – anxiety and fear. She checked her phone: it was 4 o’clock and the police hadn’t arrived yet. They spent two hours searching the woods, but they couldn’t find anything – at least a sign that Tom had been there the night before. As they were going back inside, Hayley tried to find a solution to the problem. Why would Tom leave the cabin in the middle of the night? She knew he wouldn’t do that. She’s one of the two people that know Tom’s afraid of woods, especially at nighttime. And the other person who knew this was Andrew. What if he… he killed Tom?
She decided to keep this small investigation to herself for a while. The sun started to disappear slowly. Outside the window of Hayley’s room, the darkness was falling. It was 9 p.m. already. She took a shower and went to bed. There was something keeping her awake – her investigation. Both Andrew and Margot had reasons to kill Tom. But would they actually do it?
A phone was ringing. Hayley woke up and looked over her left side, where her nightstand was. It was officer Brown. She answered. They found a body. She quickly stumbled out of bed and told Andrew and Margot. A police car was in front of the cabin. They got in and drove to the place the body was found.
Hayley looked at her phone screen. It was 3:25 a.m. She was in the middle of the woods, gazing at a body. She knew who he was. Her best friend. Officer Brown started, ‘We believe he died yesterday around 3:30 a.m. We’re not sure though. We also found the murder weapon. A knife. It looks like he’s been stabbed in the stomach.’ Hayley couldn’t feel her body. It was like all the blood inside her froze. She fell on the ground. Andrew tried to calm her down, but that wasn’t helping. She lost her best friend. Margot started rubbing her face. Officer Brown continued, ‘We’ve found the body almost 4 hours ago and started the investigation. There were fingerprints on the knife… Margot’s fingerprints. We already had them at the police station from a previous case from Margot’s town.’
Margot flipped her head towards Hayley and Andrew and said, ‘Can I explain? Please just let me explain.’ Brown nodded so Margot continued, ‘I couldn’t sleep yesterday. Around 2:20 a.m. I heard some noises coming from the kitchen, so I went downstairs to see what the matter was. Tom was there. He couldn’t sleep either. We started talking and around 3 a.m. we decided to go on a walk in the woods. I took a knife with me. Not to kill him. For self-defence. You know, just in case a bear showed up. In the woods, our talk kind of degenerated. He said some things about an older fight we had. We were both angry. He called me ugly names and then, suddenly, he started screaming. I though he saw something, and I turned while grabbing the knife in my left hand. He was staying way too close to me, and then… I… I accidentally stabbed him. He fell on the snow, and I got so scared that I just left him there. I though he died. I was a fool and ran away. At 3:35 I was back in my bed.’
Hayley couldn’t stop herself and said, ‘You killed him. What type of person leaves her friends dying? You’re the reason he’s dead. If you helped him, he would still be alive. He was afraid of the woods… how could you ever…’ Brown stepped in, ‘Tom didn’t die from the cut. He died because it was too cold outside. However, he did lose a good amount of blood. Margot you’re going with my colleagues to the station. Andrew and Hayley, let’s get you home.’
Hayley checked the time on her phone. It was 3:30 a.m. One day since Tom died. Five minutes – that’s how long it takes to destroy a friendship.
